Yes, I agree that safe, legal abortion care should be available to anyone who seeks it.
Today, I’m taking a stand to ensure that abortion care is safe, legal and accessible in every state.
The rights of pregnant people are being rolled back
Access to abortion is a human right — because the only person who should ever make decisions about a pregnancy is the person who is pregnant. Period.
But in the United States, our rights are actively being taken away.
With the overturn of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court last June, millions of people who can become pregnant are now facing a harsh reality in which they will not be able to make deeply personal choices that affect their bodies, their future, and the well-being of their families.
This ruling affects each and every person in the United States, regardless of their ability to become pregnant. Many states have already implemented total or near-total abortion bans. Although some states have introduced new laws to safeguard the right to abortion, we need further legal protections in order to prevent these rights from being rolled back.
Abortion rights are not simply about the right to choose: abortion is a safe, essential form of healthcare. And the reality is that abortion bans don’t stop abortion.
They can just stop safe abortion, putting women, girls and gender-diverse pregnant people at risk.
How we’re fighting back
Thankfully, we have international human rights law on our side. This means that everyone has the right to life, health, and freedom from violence, discrimination, torture or other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment. Forcing someone to carry a pregnancy against their will — for any reason — is a violation of these rights.
Bills like the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) offer new legal pathways to protect everyone’s right to abortion in the United States. While the WHPA was voted down by the Senate last year, the bill’s passage by the U.S. House of Representatives gives us hope that such legislation can — and will — make a difference in this country.
Even before Roe v. Wade was overturned, we have been mobilizing Americans who believe in reproductive rights to come together in solidarity.
Amnesty International has the tools, expertise and dedicated staff that have secured hundreds of human rights victories — with research that exposes human rights violations, grassroots mobilization that educates and empowers supporters like you, and advocacy that calls on key decision-makers to ensure that human rights are respected.
We have fought for reproductive rights around the world before — and we have won.
With your help, we can do it again.
